Dealing With Picky Eaters?
June 19, 2017
Children are less picky and make healthier food choices if they have been exposed to a variety of fresh, healthy foods in early childhood. When creating Wee Humans, I knew it would be important to include local, organic food in our lunches. As far as I know, we are the only preschool in the area which values child nutrition enough to have this as a core goal. For this purpose, Wee Humans has partnered with an amazing urban farm called High Desert Produce Co.
When I approached Kim and Charlie, the owners and farmers at High Desert, with the possibility of partnering with Wee Humans, they jumped at the chance. "Teaching young'ns to eat real food from the get-go is huge!" said Kim. They immediately provided a ton* (*not an accurate measurement, but it was still a very lot!) of lettuce for our Open House and then gave us beautiful peas and carrots for the Insects Class. Although they have planned their crops according to previously sold CSA shares, inevitably there are extras here and there. Each week, they have offered to donate a bundle of extra produce to our preschool rather than letting it go to waste. Kim and Charlie are doing their part to cut down on food waste, which we all know is a big problem in our country. In chatting with Charlie during a visit to the farm, he had a lot of great ideas about how to use the farm for social benefit in his neighborhood. These people at High Dessert are definitely forward-thinking, hard-working individuals with empathetic hearts to guide them!
Unfortunately for you, High Desert is sold out of shares for the year. Fortunately for your preschoolers, they can enjoy fresh, fantastic produce during our Summer Classes. Either way, absolutely keep High Desert Produce Co. in mind when you're looking for a CSA to join next year. Read more about the farm on their website https://www.highdesertproduceco.com/.
